SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES 'SIGNIFICANT COMMITMENTS' BY GROUP OF 8 ON DEVELOPING COUNTRY EXTERNAL DEBT

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General welcomes the very significant commitments made at the Group of 8 meeting in Cologne regarding the external debt of developing countries. He expresses the hope that financial resources will be made available shortly to implement the proposed measures.
