NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TO HOLD GRADUATION CEREMONY

19990621

AT HEADQUARTERS, 22 JUNE

The United Nations International School (UNIS) 1999 graduation will take place at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, 22 June, in the United Nations General Assembly Hall. Garrick Utley will address the UNIS class of 1999. Mr. Utley, a distinguished journalist, is currently with CNN, and was Chief Foreign Correspondent for ABC and NBC.

This year's graduating class of 99 young men and women represents 40 different nations and cultures. By learning and socializing together on a daily basis, these students have demonstrated that political, geographical, racial or cultural differences are minor in comparison to what they have in common. They have received an education that prepares them for the twenty-first century.

The UNIS was founded in 1947 by a group of United Nations parents to provide an education that fostered global sensibility for their children. What began modestly as a nursery school for 20 children is now a co-education, college preparatory school enroling 1,509 children from 111 countries. A suburban campus in Queens houses 226 students from kindergarten through grade 8, while the campus in Manhattan enrols 1,283 in kindergarten through grade 12. The UNIS serves a wide range of families living in the New York metropolitan area, including many affiliated with the United Nations and the city's international community.

The K-12 programme of study is rigorous one, culminating in the UNIS and/or International Baccalaureate diploma. The International Baccalaureate provides entry into universities throughout the world.
