SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS ALAN JAMES MILLS OF AUSTRALIA AS CIVILIAN POLICE COMMISSIONER OF UNITED NATIONS MISSION IN EAST TIMOR

19990616 The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Alan James Mills of Australia as Civilian Police Commissioner of the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET). Mr. Mills is already in Dili and will assume the post immediately.

Mr. Mills has served in the Australian Police since 1962. He was recently Assistant Commissioner and Special Advisory member to the Australian Federal Police Commissioner. He served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) between 1989 and 1991.

Mr. Mills was born on 15 June 1942.
