SECRETARY-GENERAL URGES MAXIMUM RESTRAINT IN KOREAN NAVAL CONFRONTATION

19990615 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General has been following the confrontation involving naval vessels of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Republic of Korea closely and with concern. He urges both sides to exercise maximum restraint and to resolve their differences through peaceful means. The Secretary-General strongly encourages the two countries to further develop and strengthen their dialogue with a view to normalizing the overall situation in the Korean Peninsula.
