ACTIVITIES OF SECRETARY-GENERAL IN WASHINGTON, D.C., ON 8 JUNE

19990610 The Secretary-General travelled to Washington, D.C., in the afternoon of Tuesday, 8 June, to address the Board of Directors of the United States Chamber of Commerce.

In his speech, the Secretary-General emphasized that the United Nations needs the world's businessmen and businesswomen as full partners "in our global mission of peace and development".

His central messages were that a fundamental shift had occurred in recent years in the attitude of the United Nations towards the private sector, and that a strong United Nations is good for business. Both the business community and the United Nations are engaged in the service of something "larger than ourselves" -- human security in the broadest sense. (For the full text of this speech, see Press Release SG/SM/7022.)

The Secretary-General had no further activities in Washington. He returned to New York that evening.
