SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC RELATIONS FORUM, ON 'THE PRIVATE SECTOR AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY', TO TAKE PLACE AT HEADQUARTERS

19990609 A forum entitled "Public Relations and the United Nations: The Private Sector and Social Responsibility", co-sponsored by the Department of Public Information (DPI) and the Public Relations Society of America International Section, will take place on Thursday, 10 June, at 3:30 p.m. in Conference Room 7.

Mian Qadrud-Din, Director, Public Affairs Division, DPI, will make opening remarks, followed by a panel discussion by senior United Nations officials and private-sector executives. Panellists include Gillian Martin Sorensen, Assistant Secretary-General for External Relations; David Finn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ruder Finn, Inc.; and Paul M. Ostergard, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Citigroup Foundation. Barbara Burns, Managing Director, Consultants in Public Relations, will moderate.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has stressed the need for greater cooperation between the United Nations and the private sector in achieving the goals of the Organization, and he has made strengthening this partnership one of the priorities of his administration. At the World Economic Forum in early 1998, he told corporate leaders, "Thriving markets and human security go hand in hand; without one, we will not have the other." The International Public Relations Forum is one of a number of initiatives of the DPI that reflect this emphasis.
