TUNISIA JOINS STANDBY ARRANGEMENTS FOR PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS

Tunisia today became the twenty-second country to sign a memorandum of understanding on the standby arrangements for the United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The signing ceremony took place in the Office of the Under- Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations. The Minister of Defence of Tunisia, Habib ben Yahia, signed the memorandum on behalf of his country; the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Bernard Miyet, signed it for the United Nations.

The other twenty-one countries that have signed the memorandum are: Jordan, Denmark, Ghana, Malaysia, Austria, Italy, Singapore, Bolivia, Ukraine, Nepal, Uruguay, Argentina, Bangladesh, Lithuania, Nigeria, Finland, Germany, Romania, Netherlands, Ireland and the Kyrgyz Republic.

Thus far, 85 countries have officially expressed their willingness to participate in the standby arrangements designed to accelerate the deployment of peacekeeping operations.
