SECRETARY-GENERAL TO MEET WITH POPE JOHN PAUL II ON 3 JUNE TO ASSESS PROSPECTS FOR RESOLVING KOSOVO CRISIS

19990602 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

At the invitation of His Holiness Pope John Paul II, the Secretary- General is travelling to Rome to meet with the Pope, in order to assess the situation in the Balkans and the prospects for resolving the crisis and building peace in the region. The meeting will take place in the Vatican on Thursday, 3 June, at 1 p.m.

The Secretary-General remains firmly committed to promoting a solution to the Kosovo crisis that allows refugees and displaced persons to return swiftly to their homes and that enables inhabitants of Kosovo and the region to live in conditions of peace and security with full respect for the civil, political and human rights of all. He sees his meeting with His Holiness as an important opportunity to exchange views on the moral and political issues underlying the crisis in Kosovo.
