NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ECUADOR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19990602 Biographical Note

Mario Alemán, the new Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Mr. Aleman was appointed Secretary-General for Foreign Affairs for his country in 1988. He was Ambassador and Assistant Secretary-General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from May to November 1981, and Ambassador and Under-Secretary for Political Affairs from August 1979 to April 1981. He served as Director of the Ministry's Department of International Instruments and Organizations from 1977 to 1979.

In 1985 he was appointed Ecuador's Ambassador to Paraguay. From 1962 to 1972, he served in various capacities in Ecuador's Embassies in Uruguay, Brazil, Dominican Republic and Mexico.

Mr. Aleman was appointed Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations Office and the Specialized Agencies with Headquarters in Geneva in January 1982. He has also served as Charge d'Affaires, Deputy Permanent Representative and Counsellor in the Permanent Mission of Ecuador to the United Nations from 1973 to 1976.

In addition, Mr. Aleman has served as Chairman of the United Nations Cocoa Conference and Vice-Chairman of the twenty-eighth session of the Trade and Development Board in 1984. The previous year, he was Vice-Chairman of the International Conference on the Question of Palestine. In December 1982 and March 1983, he chaired the tenth session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Committee on Invisibles and Financing related to trade. From 1976 to 1982, he was Vice-Chairman of the Special Committee on the United Nations Charter and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization.

Born in Quito on 18 March 1935, Mr. Aleman attended the Central University of Ecuador and holds a bachelor's degree in political and social science, as well as a Doctor of Law. He is a lawyer admitted to plead before the magistrate's and trial courts of the country.
