SECRETARY-GENERAL CONCERNED WITH REPORTS OF FIGHTING BETWEEN INDIAN AND PAKISTANI TROOPS IN KASHMIR

19990525 The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is concerned about report of a two-week long heavy exchange of fire between the Indian and Pakistani troops along the Line of Control in the Kargil and Drass sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Secretary-General calls on the parties to exercise restraint and cease the fighting, which has reportedly caused a number of casualties on the civilian population and displaced others from their villages in the area. These events again highlight the need for a political solution to the dispute over Kashmir.
