HOST COUNTRY COMMITTEE MEETS TO CONSIDER DIPLOMATIC SAFETY, SECURITY

19990513

The Committee on Relations with the Host Country decided to hold an open-ended meeting on safety tips for the diplomatic community in October this year, as it met this afternoon to consider the issue of the security of missions and safety of their personnel.

The Chairman of the Committee, Sotirios Zackheos (Cyprus), informed delegates that the Bureau had met on 5 May to discuss a proposal to hold an open-ended meeting for the diplomatic community, at which the New York City Police Department would make a presentation on the theme "Safety Tips for the Diplomatic Community". At the same meeting, the Bureau had also discussed the situation with the pending appointment of another member of the Committee from the Asian Group of States, and some additional organizational matters.

Also today, the Committee decided that, since the former Secretary of the Committee, Serguei Tarassenko, had been promoted to another division within the Office of the Legal Affairs, the functions of the Secretary of the Committee would be temporarily performed by a Principal Legal Officer from the Office of the Legal Counsel, Anthony Miller.

The Committee will meet again at a date to be announced.
