ESCWA ORGANIZES INTERGOVERNMENTAL MEETING ON TRADE LIBERALIZATION AND ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION

19990511 BEIRUT, 11 May (UN Information Centre) -- Under the patronage of Fahem Ben Sultan Al Qassimi, Minister of Economy and Commerce of the United Arab Emirates, the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), with the cooperation of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Economy and Commerce, is organizing the First Session of a Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the countries of the ESCWA region, on 15 May at the Inter-Continental Hotel, Abu Dhabi.

Mr. Al Qassimi, will open the meeting. Hazem Abdel Aziz El-Beblawi, Executive Secretary of ESCWA, and Adel Khalifa, UNDP Resident Representative, Abu Dhabi, will make statements.

The objective of the meeting is to provide an official framework to discuss issues related to trade liberalization and economic globalization. ESCWA activities concerning international trade and economic globalization will be discussed. The meeting also deals with the agreements of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the new negotiations about issues, such as agricultural trade, trade in services, trade and investment, trade and competition and electronic commerce.

This First Session of the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Liberalization in the countries of the ESCWA region was established by ESCWA resolution 214 (XIX) issued on 7 May 1997, and approved by the Economic and Social Council on 18 July 1997.

The official representatives of ESCWA member countries and experts from some international organizations, such as the WTO and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), will also attend the meeting.
