COMMITTEE ON INFORMATION DECIDES PREPARATION OF REPORT SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT BY OPEN-ENDED WORKING GROUP IN INFORMAL CONSULTATIONS

19990507 As it met to prepare and adopt its report to the General Assembly's fifty-fourth session, the Committee on Information, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 53/59, decided that preparation of its report should be carried out by an open-ended working group in informal consultations.

In other matters this afternoon, the Committee was also informed that the delegations of Sweden and the World Intellectual Property Association had requested to participate in the twenty-first session as observers.

The Committee's formal meeting was then adjourned and it went into informal consultations.

Yesterday the Committee concluded its general debate and consideration of substantive questions. The Committee had before it the reports of the Secretary-General (documents A/AC.198/1999/2-8). (For background on those reports and coverage of the Committee's debate, see Press Releases PI/1127 of 30 April, PI/1131 of 3 May, PI/1132 of 4 May, PI/1133 of 5 May, and PI/1134 of 6 May.)

For the remainder of its two-week session, which is being held from 3 to 14 May, the Committee will also continue its ongoing examination of United Nations public information policies and activities, as well as progress achieved by the United Nations system in the field of information and communications.

The Committee will meet again at 3 p.m. Monday, 10 May, to continue its twenty-first session.
