NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SAUDI ARABIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19990506 Biographical NoteFawzi Bin Abdul Majeed Shobokshi, the new Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary- General Kofi Annan today.
From 1997 until his current appointment, Mr. Shobokshi represented his country as Ambassador to the Russian Federation. Prior to that, from 1983 to 1997, he served as Ambassador to Japan. In 1994, he also became Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Japan.
Mr. Shobokshi started his diplomatic career when he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1961. In 1963, he took the position of Consul at the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Vienna, Austria. Following that, he served as In-Charge of Political Affairs in the Sudan (1967-1971); Chargé d'affaires at the Embassy in Taiwan (1971-1979); and Ambassador to the Philippines (1979- 1983).
Born in 1938 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Mr. Shobokshi graduated from Cairo University Law College in 1961, and also holds an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Baguio in the Philippines.
He is a holder of the Brilliant Star of the Republic of China and the Order of Sikatuna, Rank of Datu, from the Republic of the Philippines.
