SECURITY COUNCIL REFERS APPLICATION OF REPUBLIC OF NAURU FOR UN MEMBERSHIP TO COMMITTEE ON ADMISSION OF NEW MEMBERS FOR EXAMINATION
19990504 The Security Council this morning referred the application of the Republic of Nauru for membership in the United Nations to the Committee on the Admission of New Members for examination and report.The Council was acting in response to a note by the Secretary-General (document S/1999/478) in which he circulates a letter from Bernard Dowiyogo, President and Minister for External Affairs of the Republic of Nauru. The letter, dated 16 April, requests the admission of the Republic of Nauru as a Member in accordance with the provisions of Article 4 of the United Nations Charter, and with those of rule 58 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council and rule 134 of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly.
The letter also contains a declaration by the President pledging that the Republic of Nauru accepts the obligations contained in the United Nations Charter and pledges to carry them out.
The meeting, which was called to order at 12:14 P.M, was adjourned at 12:16 p.m.
