ACTIVITIES OF SECRETARY-GENERAL IN MOSCOW, 28 - 29 APRIL

19990430 The Secretary-General arrived in Moscow from Berlin in the evening of Wednesday, 28 April.

Before beginning his official meetings on Thursday, the Secretary- General conferred with his Special Envoy for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Yuliy Vorontsov.

At 9 a.m., the Secretary-General met with President Boris Yeltsin's Special Envoy, Victor Chernomyrdin. They had an extensive and substantive exchange on Kosovo.

The Foreign Minister of Greece, Georgios Papandreou, then called on the Secretary-General. They too discussed the Kosovo issue, prospects for peace and the humanitarian situation in the subregion.

The Secretary-General then met with President Yeltsin. They exchanged views on the situation in Kosovo. They pledged to work together.

The discussion continued with Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov who, over lunch, outlined Russia's approach to a peaceful settlement. The Secretary- General and the Foreign Minister held similar talks with Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov.

In a second meeting with the Foreign Minister, the discussions expanded to include Iraq and the Middle East.

The Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister then held a quadrilateral session on Kosovo with Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy of Canada and Georgios Papandreou, Foreign Minister of Greece. The four gentlemen then met with the press.

"It's been an intense Balkans day for all of us", the Secretary-General said.

He then left Moscow for New York, via London.

He returned to Headquarters on Friday, 30 April.
