UNITED NATIONS, GERMAN TELEVISION TO COOPERATE IN PRODUCING 'CHILDREN WITHOUT CHILDHOOD' TELEVISION SERIES

19990408 The Department of Public Information has announced the signing of a cooperation agreement among the United Nations, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the German television network Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF) to produce a five-part television series entitled "Children without Childhood". This is an important, breakthrough cooperative venture between the United Nations family and a major broadcasting network.

The ZDF will produce the series to mark the "Day of Six Billion" on 12 October, when the world population is expected to reach 6 billion people.

"Children without Childhood" will examine the lives of children in five countries -- India, Japan, Mexico, Philippines and Uganda -- who have missed out on childhood and whose lives and health are at risk.

Sir Roger Moore, UNICEF's Special Representative for the Film Arts, will launch the series at a press conference on 12 April at the MIP-Television media market (Marché International des Programmes de Télévision) in Cannes, France. The series will be broadcast on prime time in Germany in October and distributed worldwide.
