COMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES FOR DEVELOPMENT ELECTS VICE-CHAIRMEN, RAPPORTEURS
19990405 The Committee on Energy and Natural Resources for Development this afternoon, elected Wilhelmus C. Turkenburg (Netherlands) and John Michael Matuszak (United States) as Vice-Chairmen, and Wafik Meshref (Egypt) and Owen Macdonald Kankhulungo (Malawi) as Rapporteurs for its first session. (The Committee this morning elected Christian M. Katsande (Zimbabwe) as its Chairman.)Mr. Turkenburg will chair the Committee's sub-group on energy, for which Mr. Meshref will serve as Rapporteur. The sub-group on energy consists of: Messaoud Moumaout Boumaour (Algeria); Hernan Bravo Trejos (Costa Rica); Dmytro Victorovych Derogan (Ukraine); Bernard Devin (France); Jon Ingimarsson (Iceland); Ahmad Kahrobaian (Iran); Christian M. Katsande (Zimbabwe); Neculai Pavlovschi (Romania); Raymond Marcio Wright (Jamaica); and Zhang Guocheng (China).
The Committee's sub-group on water resources will be chaired by Mr. Matuszak, and Mr. Kankhulungo will serve as its Rapporteur. The sub-group is composed of: Adam Edow Adawa (Kenya); Carlos Alberto Aguilar Molina (El Salvador); Malin Falkenmark (Sweden); Siripong Hungspreug (Thailand); Badr Kasme (Syria); Markku Juhani Makela (Finland); Sergey M. Natalchuk (Russian Federation); Ainun Nishat (Bangladesh); Carlos Augusto Saldivar (Paraguay); and Eddy Kofi Smith (Ghana).
A subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council, the Committee was created through resolution 1998/46 of 31 July 1998, annex I, which merged two committees -- the Committee on New and Renewable Sources of Energy and on Energy for Development and the Committee on Natural Resources -- into a single 24-member expert body. During the first session, it will take up items on issues in the water and energy sectors that emerged after the cancellation sessions of the two former Committees.
The Committee will meet again at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, 7 April, to adopt its organization of work and to hold a dialogue with the Inter-agency Task Force on Energy, the United Nations Secretariat, international organizations and major groups.
