NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF COTE D'IVOIRE PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19990405 Biographical Note

Claude Stanislas Bouah-Kamon, the new Permanent Representative of Côte d'Ivoire to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Before this appointment, he was his country's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Offices in Geneva and Vienna, and prior to that -- from 1994 to 1996 -- he was Ambassador of Côte d'Ivoire to Algeria.

Mr. Bouah-Kamon began his diplomatic career in 1976 as an Assistant at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, first in the field of cooperation studies, and later at the Department of Political Affairs. In 1978, he assumed the position of Adviser at the Mission of Côte d'Ivoire in Geneva and, in 1980, he became First Secretary at the Embassy in Berne, Switzerland.

In 1984 Mr. Bouah-Kamon was named Assistant Director of Technical Assistance with France at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 1986 Assistant Director of Personnel at the same Ministry. In 1988, he was assigned as First Secretary to the Embassy of Côte d'Ivoire in China, where he stayed until 1991. From 1991 to 1994, he served as First Secretary at his country's Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Bouah-Kamon holds a degree in history and geography from the University of Abidjan, as well as diplomas from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Belgian Administration for Development Cooperation. He carried out advanced studies in diplomacy at the College for Senior Civil Servants. He was also decorated with the National Order of Côte d'Ivoire.

Born in Abidjan on 13 July 1949, Mr. Bouah-Kamon is married, with three children.
