SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS INGRID LEHMANN DIRECTOR OF UN INFORMATION SERVICE IN VIENNA
19990330 The Secretary-General has appointed Ingrid Lehmann as Director of the United Nations Information Service in Vienna as of 1 April.Ms. Lehmann, a national of Germany, is currently Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Athens. She joined the Secretariat in 1975 as an Associate Officer in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, and went on to work in both the information and political areas. From 1979 to 1980 she was a Political Affairs Officer with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), and from 1980 to 1984 she worked in the Department for Disarmament Affairs -- both in New York and Geneva -- where she managed the World Disarmament Campaign and organized a number of conferences for non-governmental organizations.
With the Department of Public Information she served from 1985 to 1993 as Chief of the Non-Governmental Organizations Section, Chief of the Peace and Security Programmes Section and Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Washington, D.C. During this period she also participated in the United Nations Transitional Assistance Group in Namibia (UNTAG).
Ms. Lehmann was a faculty member at the Lester Pearson International Peacekeeping Centre in Nova Scotia, Canada, from 1995 to 1997 and has written several publications on peacekeeping.
Born in Berlin on 7 June 1948, Ms. Lehmann has a Master's degree in political science and Ph.D. from the Freie Universitat in Berlin, as well as a Master's degree in history from the University of Minnesota.
