SECRETARY-GENERAL DEPLORES ASSASSINATION OF VICE-PRESIDENT OF PARAGUAY

19990324 The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General deplores the assassination of Vice-President Luís Maria Argaña of Paraguay and expresses his sincere condolences to his family. The Secretary-General is concerned about the implications of the assassination for the democratic transition in Paraguay. He hopes that calm will prevail and that a political dialogue will continue so as to ensure that Paraguay proceeds along the transition to its hard-earned democracy.
