SECURITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE ESTABLISHED PURSUANT TO RESOLUTION 1160 (1998) CONCERNED AT LACK OF RESPONSE FROM BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

19990324 At its meeting, held on 11 March 1999, the Committee, while taking note of the letter of the Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Chairman of the Committee dated 13 January 1999, noticed with deep concern the lack of authoritative response from the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina to its letters dated 1 December 1998 and 12 January 1999 in which the Committee requested to provide information on the measures taken to give effect to the prohibitions imposed by the Security Council in paragraph 8 of its resolution 1160 (1998) of 31 March 1998. The Committee noted and brought to the attention of the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina that it remained the only country bordering the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia which had not reported under paragraph 12 of the above resolution. In this connection, the Committee wishes to reiterate its position contained in its Press Release (SC/6587) of 23 October 1998:

"... the Committee acknowledged that concentrated efforts by States are needed for the effective implementation of the arms embargo, especially by those countries neighbouring the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia."

The Committee firmly believes that the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina must fully comply with its obligations under resolution 1160 (1998) and inform the Committee of enacted legislation and/or other measures taken pursuant to paragraph 12 of resolution 1160 (1998), in particular due to its location as a neighbouring State to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The Committee expects to receive this information without further delay.
