SECRETARY-GENERAL, EXPRESSING GREAT SADNESS AT DEATH OF YEHUDI MENUHIN DESCRIBES HIM AS 'CITIZEN OF THE WORLD IN FULLEST SENSE'
19990312 The following was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:The Secretary-General, who learned with great sadness this morning of the death of Lord Menuhim, has issued the following statement:
"Yehudi Menuhin was not only a great musician whose art brought joy to millions of people all over the world. He was also a brilliant teacher and citizen of the world in the fullest sense -- one whose vision and culture gave him a deep empathy with fellow human beings of every creed and colour, and who constantly sought to place his fame and wisdom at the service of humanity. He devoted himself tirelessly to world peace, human rights, defense of the environment, and support for the United Nations.
"I was privileged to meet him many times -- most recently at the World Economic Forum in Davos six weeks ago -- and was always impressed by the sweetness of his nature and the breadth of his concerns. As a member of a people which more than any other has been the victim of this century's barbarism, he redeemed the century by rising above all resentment and showing what human beings at their best are capable of. The world is a sadder place without him, but his music, and his example, will endure."
