UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY TO CONDUCT SEMINARS ON PEACE AND GOVERNANCE AT UN HEADQUARTERS
19990309 The United Nations University will host a series of seminars based on going current research projects being carried out within the framework of its Peace and Governance Programme. These will provide an opportunity for the University to interface with a wider audience, including United Nations staff members. The themes, dates and venues of each session are indicated below. There is an option to attend either a morning or afternoon session (11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m).15 March: Ethics and International Affairs
This session focuses on tensions arising from competing values and normative systems in the international arena with particular attention to such issues as the environment, refugees, diplomacy and distributive justice.
Lecturers: Daniel Warner, Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva; and Oran Young, Dartmouth University.

17 March: Peacekeeping and Peace-building in Africa
This seminar will explore the modalities and difficulties encountered in the operationalization of a broad definition of peace from preventive deployment and peacemaking to democratization, with specific reference to Liberia. The relationship between the United Nations and regional actors will also be discussed.

19 March: Rising and Fading Powers: International Order in Transition
Drawing upon the cases of Great Britain, the United States and the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), this seminar explores the process of international power transition and the challenges encountered to affect peaceful change in the international system.
