NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS ANNUAL UN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL STUDENT CONFERENCE TO BE HELD AT HEADQUARTERS ON 4 - 5 MARCH
19990303 Conference To Focus on 'Facing New Millennium: Search for Global Ethics'"Facing the New Millennium: a Search for Global Ethics" will be the theme of the twenty-third United Nations International School (UNIS) Student Conference to be held in the General Assembly Hall, at Headquarters, from 4 to 5 March.
The annual conference, which provides a forum for young people to discuss global issues and to hear high profile experts share their views on the topic, is the culmination of eight months of organization, planning, liaison and structuring by the Student Coordinating Committee to accommodate over 600 high school students from 10 international schools, 23 national schools, and 12 schools from the tri-state area representing over 100 nationalities.
The featured speakers of this year's conference will be the following: United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan; the Director of Sustainable Development and Environmental Unit of the Organization of American States (OAS), Richard Meganck; Minister for Development Cooperation of Denmark, Poul Nielson; Diretor, Centre for Bio-ethics, University of Pennsylvania, Arthur Caplan; Senior ABC News Corespondent, Bill Blakemore; Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Carol Bellamy; Adjutant General Vermont, Major General Martha T. Rainville; Ambassador and Head of the Delegation for the European Commission, Luigi Boselli; Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, as well as Chairman of UNIS Board of Trustees, Satya N. Nandan; Director, National Labor Committee, United States, Charles Kernaghan; Director, Gender, Family and Development International Programme of the Population Council, Judith Bruce; Professor of Religion, Bucknell University, Mary Evelyn Tucker; United Nations Under-Secretary- General for Economic and Social Affairs, Nitin Desai; and Amnesty International Representative to the United Nations, Iain Levine.
The two days of general debate and discussions will focus on the impending millennium and the issues that the future generations will face in hope of gaining an understanding of how the youth of today will proceed into the next millennium. Issues relating to controversial subjects such as human rights, the media, the environment, the role of women in the military, social affairs and the economy will also be examined and discussed.
