REGIONAL MEETING ON DISARMAMENT TO BE HELD IN KATHMANDU, 18-20 MARCH

19990301 NEW YORK, 26 February (Department for Disarmament Affairs) -- The Department for Disarmament Affairs, through its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, will convene a regional disarmament meeting on "Security Concerns and Regional Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific", in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 18 to 20 March.

This regional meeting, the eleventh in its series, will address security concerns in Asia and the Pacific today, and focus on regional cooperation for confidence-building, stability and prosperity. The meeting will also deal with the important issues of "human security", such as illicit arms transfer, terrorism, environmental protection and poverty.

Approximately 40 participants from governments, academic and research institutes and non-governmental organizations, mainly from the Asia-Pacific region, are expected to attend the three-day meeting in their personal capacity. It will be financed entirely from voluntary contributions of Member States and other interested organizations.

The Regional Centre's activities, carried out through the organization of regional meetings, have the primary objective of encouraging regional and subregional dialogue for the enhancement of openness, transparency and confidence-building, as well as the promotion of disarmament and security. The dialogue, facilitated by those regional meetings has become known as the "Kathmandu Process". General Assembly resolution 53/78B reaffirmed the continued operation and further strengthening of the Regional Centre as an essential means to promote that process.
