SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES ESTABLISHMENT OF DIRECT BUS SERVICE BETWEEN NEW DELHI AND LAHORE

19990222 The following statement, attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General, was issued on Friday, 19 February:

The Secretary-General welcomes the establishment of a direct bus service between the cities of New Delhi and Lahore. He particularly welcomes the decision of the Prime Minister of India, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to personally inaugurate this direct service on Saturday, 20 February, by taking the very first bus to Pakistan. The Secretary-General notes with great satisfaction that, following an invitation by Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, the two Prime Ministers will have a series of meetings in Lahore on 20 and 21 February.

The Secretary-General hopes that Prime Minister Vajpayee's visit to Pakistan will contribute to the improvement of bilateral relations.
