SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES NATIONAL UNITY GOVERNMENT IN GUINEA-BISSAU

19990222 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General welcomes the swearing in, on 20 February 1999, of a government of national unity in Guinea-Bissau in accordance with the Abuja Agreement of 1 November 1998. The Secretary-General sees this development as an encouraging step towards restoring stability and peace in Guinea-Bissau.
