NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF IRAQ PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19990203 Biographical Note

Saeed Hasan, the new Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Before his current appointment, Mr. Hasan was the Deputy Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations, a position he held from 1994 to 1998. He also served as Iraq's Deputy Director of the Department of International Organizations from 1992 to 1993.

Prior to that appointment, Mr. Hasan was the Head of the Disarmament Division at the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq from 1988 to 1991. Mr. Hasan joined Iraq's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in October 1987, and, prior to that, worked at the Ministry of Education from 1986 to 1987.

In 1967, Mr. Hasan obtained a Bachelor's degree in geography from the University of Baghdad, College of Education, and subsequently worked as a high school teacher in Baghdad from 1967-1979. From 1980-1986, he earned a Doctorate in regional planning, from the Sorbonne in Paris, France.

Born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1945, Mr. Hasan is married with three children.
