SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES DEEP SYMPATHY WITH GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE OF COLOMBIA AFTER EARTHQUAKE HITS COUNTRY
19990126 The following statement was issued today by a spokesperson for Secretary-General Kofi Annan in Geneva:The Secretary-General was profoundly distressed to learn of the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in the Department of Valle del Cauca in west Colombia and the tragic loss of human lives. The Secretary- General wishes to express his deepest sympathy to the Government and the people of Colombia as they struggle to cope with the tragedy which has befallen them. The promptness with which the Government of Colombia has started to mobilize humanitarian aid has helped considerably. The United Nations stands ready to assist in any way possible the ongoing efforts to provide relief to the affected people.
