SECRETARY-GENERAL PLEASED BY PRESIDENT CLINTON'S PLEDGE ON UNITED STATES DEBT TO UNITED NATIONS

19990120 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General was pleased to hear President Clinton, in his State of the Union message last night, renew his pledge to work with the United States Congress to pay both United States dues and debts to the United Nations and refer to the "crucial role" the United Nations must play in the new century.

As the Secretary-General said to the Council on Foreign Relations last night, the United Nations needs the United States to achieve its goals and, he added "I believe the United States needs the United Nations no less."

A strong and effective United Nations can exist only when all Member States pay their dues in full and on time.
