TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR DEPOSITORY LIBRARIES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES CONDUCTED BY DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD LIBRARY

19990114 A workshop on United Nations Documentation: Overview and Research Options on the UN Website, organized by the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, Department of Public Information, will be held from 13 to 15 January in New Delhi, India, for depository libraries in Asia. The workshop will take place at the United Nations Information Centre in New Delhi.

The workshop will be attended by 19 librarians in charge of United Nations deposit collections in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and by four Reference Assistants from United Nations Information Centres at Dhaka, Islamabad, Jakarta and New Delhi.

The aim of the seminar is to enhance traditional document research skills by giving hands-on training with the latest electronic research tools developed by the Organization. It will include a programme of lectures and demonstrations on access to United Nations documentation, the use of United Nations Bibliographic Information System (UNBIS), the Optical Disk System (ODS) and instructions on how to access United Nations documentation on the World Wide Web. In a recent survey of depository libraries, the need for training and guidance was strongly expressed.

The Dag Hammarskjöld Library hopes to conduct similar workshops in other areas in developing countries in the future.
