Print Advertisement on Deforestation, Television Advertisements about Human Rights and against Drugs to Receive Awards

Advertising agencies from France, the United States and Brazil will be honoured for public service advertising on Friday, 15 January, when the United Nations Awards are presented by Kensaku Hogen, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, at the 1998 International Advertising Awards Show at the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

The United Nations Awards are presented annually and are jointly sponsored by the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) and The New York Festivals. They were established in 1990 to honour public service advertising that best exemplifies the ideals and goals of the United Nations.

This year's panel of judges reviewed work dealing with such United Nations-related issues as human rights, the status of women, the environment, health, the disabled, poverty and the fight against drugs. The judges selected three public service advertisements -- two television and one print -- to receive awards.

Ogilvy & Mather France will be presented with the Gold United Nations Award for a television advertisement on human rights, entitled "The Candle", which they produced for Amnesty International. The Silver United Nations Award will be received by NKH&W, Inc., of Kansas City, Missouri, for "What's It Cost", a television advertisement about the emotional and physical cost of drug abuse. The Bronze United Nations Award will go to ALMAP/BBDO of Sao Paulo, Brazil, for their print advertisement, "Stop Deforestation".

In addition to the winners, the following companies will be honoured as finalists: Asher & Partners (U.S.A.), Ammirati Puris Lintas (Poland), Chroma Films (Brazil), DDB Needham (U.S.A.), Dentsu Young & Rubicam (Malaysia), The Jupiter Drawing Room (South Africa) and The Gang Film (France).
