SECRETARY-GENERAL CALLS ON PARTIES IN GUATEMALA TO CONTINUE PROGRESS IN IMPLEMENTATION OF 1996 PEACE AGREEMENTS

19981228 Following is a message of Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the occasion of the second anniversary of the signing of the Guatemala Peace Agreements:

The Secretary-General conveys his best wishes to the people of Guatemala and the signatories to the 1996 Peace Agreements, the Government and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG), on the second anniversary of the signing of the accords which ended 36 years of internal conflict.

The Secretary-General recalls that during his visit to Guatemala in July 1998, he was encouraged to see the progress made in the implementation of the Peace Agreements. He is hopeful that the Government, political parties and all the people of Guatemala will seize the opportunities which will arise during 1999 to advance further towards national consensus on the broad agenda of the Peace Agreements.
