KYRGYZ REPUBLIC JOINS STANDBY ARRANGEMENTS FOR PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS

19981224 The Kyrgyz Republic became on 22 December the twenty-first country to sign a memorandum of understanding on the standby arrangements for United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The signing ceremony took place in the Office of the Under-Secretary- General for Peacekeeping Operations. The Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the United Nations, Ambassador Zamira B. Eshmambetova, signed the memorandum on behalf of his country; the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Bernard Miyet, signed it for the United Nations.

The other countries which have signed the memorandum are: Jordan, Denmark, Ghana, Malaysia, Austria, Italy, Singapore, Bolivia, Ukraine, Nepal, Uruguay, Argentina, Bangladesh, Lithuania, Nigeria, Finland, Germany, Romania, Netherlands, and Ireland.

Thus far 80 countries have officially expressed their willingness to participate in the standby arrangements designed to accelerate the deployment of peacekeeping operations.
