NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE NETHERLANDS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19981221 Biographical NoteArnold Pieter Van Walsum, the new Permanent Representative of the Netherlands, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Prior to his current appointment, beginning in 1993, Mr. Van Walsum was Ambassador of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Bonn. Before that, from 1989 to 1993, he served as Director-General, Political Affairs, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and as Ambassador to Thailand from 1985 to 1989.
Mr. Van Walsum served as Head of the Western Hemisphere Department in his Government's Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1981 to 1985 and, from 1979 to 1981, as Counsellor, Permanent Representation to the European Commission, in Brussels. Prior to that, from 1975 to 1979, he served as Counsellor in London, and as First Secretary in New Delhi from 1974 to 1979. Before that, from 1970 to 1974, he was First Secretary in his country's Mission to the United Nations in New York.
Mr. Van Walsum obtained his law degree from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.
Born in Rotterdam in June 1934, he is married and has two children.
