ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT CALLS FOR LASTING SOLUTION TO CRISIS IN PERSIAN GULF BASED ON UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTIONS

19981117 The following is a statement issued today by the spokesman for the President of the General Assembly, Didier Opertti (Uruguay), concerning the Persian Gulf crisis:

The President of the General Assembly, taking into account the functions and responsibilities of the Assembly, followed with special attention and deep concern the development of events in the region of the Persian Gulf and the consideration of this problem by the Security Council.

Since this crisis, which endangered international peace and security, has been averted, the President of the General Assembly wishes to express his satisfaction and hope that a lasting solution will be reached in accordance with United Nations resolutions.
