NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS UNITED NATIONS LEGAL COUNSEL WILL INTRODUCE INTERNATIONAL TREATY

19981113 ELECTRONIC DATABASE TO SIXTH COMMITTEE ON 16 NOVEMBER

The General Assembly Sixth Committee (Legal) will discuss the United Nations Decade of International Law (1990-1999) on 16 and 17 November. The debate will include a discussion based on the note of the Secretary-General (document A/53/492) which contains a segment on the new electronic treaty database.

The Treaty Section of the Office of Legal Affairs will make a video presentation of the new electronic database to members of the Sixth Committee, members of the press and of the Secretariat at large. The presentation is designed to demonstrate the treaty registration and publication process as it was in the past and how it will be done with the new electronic database process.

A special emphasis will be placed on electronic input, data processing and desktop publishing which will contribute to the speedier publication of the output of the Section, including the United Nations Treaty Series and the Multilateral Treaties Deposited with the Secretary-General, and towards resource savings. The presentation has been prepared in collaboration with Decan, the company which was contracted to develop the database. Hans Corell, the Legal Counsel, will introduce the presentation.

The presentation is scheduled to take place on Monday, 16 November, in Conference Room 4, at 11:30 am.
