DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INFORMATION ANNOUNCES CREATION OF HOME PAGES IN ARABIC, CHINESE
19981112 The Department of Public Information (DPI) will launch a pilot project, the United Nations Home Page in Arabic and Chinese, at 5 p.m. Friday, 13 November, in Conference Room 4.In accordance with General Assembly resolution 52/214 on multilingualism, United Nations documentation and information material is now available on its website in all six official languages. With this latest initiative, the DPI is reinforcing its continuing commitment to making information available to as wide an audience as possible in the most cost-effective manner.
The new sites feature, among other things, basic information about the United Nations and its organs, the Charter of the United Nations, the Statute of the International Court of Justice, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the latest report of the Secretary-General on the work of the Organization, numerous resolutions of the General Assembly from its fifty-second session, as well as the agenda and programme of work for the fifty-third session.
Also included are lists of Member States, information for delegations, online tours of Headquarters and the United Nations Office at Geneva, as well as parts of the highly acclaimed CyberSchoolbus. The official launch of sites is merely the beginning as their continuous expansion and enrichment is planned. The sites can be viewed on the Internet with browsers that are enabled for the two languages.
The Arabic and Chinese web sites have been created in cooperation with the Department of General Assembly Affairs and Conference Services. Information was also provided by the Office of the Iraq Programme. The sites are located at http://www.un.org/arabic and http://www.un.org/chinese, respectively.
