NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS 1998 WORLD INVESTMENT REPORT TO BE INTRODUCED TO MEDIA
19981106 IN NEW YORK ON 9 NOVEMBERThe degree to which foreign direct investment (FDI) continues to set new records, despite all of the negative consequences of the Asian financial crisis, is among the developments outlined in the 1998 World Investment Report, which is produced by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and will be presented to the media at Headquarters in New York on 9 November in Room S-226 at 11:15 a.m. - a day ahead of the main launch in Lyon, France.
In a world of rapid globalization, the Report has become a vital companion to all who are interested in foreign direct investment. It notes that FDI and short-term capital flows are not moving in tandem.
There are also important shifts in the key factors influencing business investment. Analysis shows that transnational corporations continue to invest in East Asian economies, even though there are mixed trends. Latin America and economies in transition are showing new records. Although marginalization continues in Africa, there are encouraging signs of a few success stories.
The Report will be introduced by Professor Robert Lipsy, Director of the National Bureau of Economic Research in New York, and Georg Kell, United Nations economist in the Office of the Secretary-General.
The Report and all related information, including that given at the press conference, are under embargo until 10 November, 2200 hours GMT. Copies of the Report and background material will be available then.
