SECRETARY-GENERAL CONGRATULATES 'PIONEER FOR LONGEVITY' JOHN GLENN

19981102 Following is the text of the Secretary-General Kofi Annan's congratulatory message to United States Senator and astronaut John Glenn, issued by his Spokesman on 30 October:

On behalf of the United Nations, congratulations on yet another triumph in a long and heroic career. The world knows you as a pioneer of the space age. You have now become a pioneer for longevity. Returning to outer space at age 77, you are helping to launch the United Nations International Year of Older Persons, to be celebrated in 1999. Thank you and best wishes for a safe return. The United Nations is with you all the way.
