ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT URGES GENEROUS ASSISTANCE TO VICTIMS OF HURRICANE MITCH

19981102 The following statement was issued today by the spokesman for the President of the General Assembly, Didier Opertti (Uruguay):

I have been greatly saddened by the loss of human life and extensive material damage caused by the aftermath of hurricane Mitch in Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. I would like to express heartfelt condolences to the Governments of affected countries and families of the victims, and appeal to the international community to urgently and generously extend all necessary assistance to alleviate the grave consequences of this disaster.
