NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF JAPAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19981029 Biographical Note

Yukio Satoh, the new Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Until his appointment, Mr. Satoh was his country's Ambassador to Australia, from 1996 to 1998. He served as Ambassador to the Netherlands from 1994 to 1996, Director-General of the North American Affairs Bureau, and Director-General, Information Analysis of the Research and Planning Bureau, in Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs between the years 1990 to 1994.

He had previously served as Consul-General in Hong Kong, 1988 to 1990, Assistant Vice-Minister for Parliamentary Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 1987 to 1988, and Counsellor in Japan's London Embassy, where he was also Consul-General for the United Kingdom, 1981 to 1984.

After entering the foreign service in 1963, Mr. Satoh worked until 1976 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo and in Japan's Embassy in Washington, D.C. In 1976, he was appointed Director of the Security Affairs Division, the American Affairs Bureau, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Born on 6 October 1939, Mr. Satoh was educated at the University of Tokyo and at Edinburgh University. He is married with two children.
