SECRETARY-GENERAL SADDENED BY FATALITIES ON DEMINING ACCIDENTS, PRAISES WORK OF VICTIMS AS 'UNSELFISH AND INVALUABLE'

19981028 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The United Nations and the international community suffered four fatalities last week in demining accidents in Angola, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia.

The Secretary-General was saddened to learn of these accidents, which underline that landmines still pose, in many parts of the world, a grave danger both to local populations and to those who have gone to help them.

The United Nations shares the grief of the families and friends of the victims of these tragic accidents. We hope that they will be comforted, as we are, in the knowledge that people will have safer and better futures because of the unselfish and invaluable work done by those dear to them.
