SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES AGREEMENT MARKING END OF BORDER DISPUTE BETWEEN ECUADOR AND PERU

19981026 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General warmly welcomes the agreement signed today by the Presidents of Ecuador and Peru, which marks an end to their long-standing border dispute. He also wishes to commend the Guarantor Countries of the 1942 Rio Protocol (Argentina, Brazil, Chile and the United States) for their invaluable role in achieving a solution to this dispute.
