19981023

On page 2 of Press Release GA/SHC/3482 issued 22 October, the first paragraph of the statement by the representative of Kazakhstan should read as follows:

AKMARAL ARYSTANBEKOVA (Kazakhstan) said her Government was conducting a targeted policy to promote and protect the rights of children in her country, reflected in a memorandum entitled "Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Central Asia and Kazakhstan". The UNICEF and Kazakhstan's Charitable Fund for Children "Bobek" were active initiators and co-sponsors of the undertaking at which the memorandum was adopted. Those efforts were aimed at full implementation of the Convention in Central Asia and Kazakhstan, in the context of socially oriented economic reforms. Also, legislative instruments had been adopted that provided for the protection of the rights of children, including a new act on marriage and the family, which also reflected the provisions of the Convention.
