SECRETARY-GENERAL REGRETS EXECUTIONS OF 24 MILITARY OFFICERS IN SIERRA LEONE

19981022 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General regrets the executions of 24 military officers in Sierra Leone on 19 October, despite his appeal to the Government to consider, at a minimum, a stay of execution pending review of the proceedings before relevant international monitoring bodies. He hopes that the Government of Sierra Leone ensures the due process in further trials. The Secretary-General endorses President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah's call on the rebels to surrender and urges the parties to proceed towards eventual national reconciliation.
