19981019 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General was shocked to learn of the explosion in Nigeria, which took hundreds of lives. This is a major tragedy and environmental disaster. He expresses his condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government of Nigeria.
