CLOSING DISCUSSION OF CAUSES OF CONFLICTS, PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA, ASSEMBLY HEARS CALLS FOR ADDRESS OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROBLEMS OF CONTINENT
19981016 CORRECTIONIn Press Release GA/9478 of 12 October, the third full paragraph on page 13, which is part of the summary of the statement by the Permanent Representative of Eritrea, HAILE MENKERIOS, should read as follows:
The border conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia remained unresolved because of the refusal of the Ethiopian Government to talk about a peaceful solution until and unless Eritrea unilaterally and unconditionally withdrew from territories that Ethiopia claimed, but were within Eritrea's established borders, he said. The unnecessary conflict between the two countries had started as a result of Ethiopia's occupation of territories within Eritrea's borders, which were established during the colonial period. His country had invited an independent verification of that fact from the outset and presented concrete proposals for the peaceful and legal solution to the issue. Eritrea remained ready for dialogue with the Ethiopian Government for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, and demarcation of their common border on the basis of recognition of the inviolability of boundaries established during the colonial period.
