SECRETARY-GENERAL ANNOUNCES MISSION TO FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA
19981015 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:In response to the Security Council's request last week, the Secretary-General has decided to send a mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to explore the Secretariat's first-hand capability to assess developments on the ground and to continue reporting to the Security Council on the compliance by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia authorities with its resolutions 1160 (1998) and 1199 (1998).
The Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Rome, Staffan de Mistura, will lead this mission, which will also include representatives of various United Nations departments and agencies involved. Mr. de Mistura has extensive United Nations inter-agency experience in the field in emergency areas. He has been entrusted with special tasks by successive Secretaries-General, more recently in connection with the humanitarian assistance to Iraq. The mission is expected to arrive in the region over the weekend.
